I recommend a setup at least 20 gallons for stability
These are ideal, but have a bit of variation. Extremes are to be avoided -
PH 6.8-7.0
GH 5
KH 0-2
TDS 100-200
Ammonia, Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0-5 ppm

when say 20 gallon or larger is it for water stability or footprint. would a 20 long be better than a 20 high?

Stability mainly, but the 20 long footprint is better of course than the 20 high.
